Marlene and family, I am in Florida for the winter and just learned of Docs passing. My sincere sympathy to you. Dick and I had a tremendous respect for him. Dick really relied on Doc so much in the forming of the Friends group and his knowledge and leadership was so helpful in the things we have been able to ultimately accomplish. He would be so happy to know that we have been able to secure the $30,000 Wetland grant.

Uncle Dick patched me and my brother up more times that I care remember. He used to say he put more than a spool of thread in each of us. Always had such an amazing out look on life. “Your back already, it’s not time to take out your stitches yet. Yet here you are needing more. What did you learn this time? It doesn’t matter what you want to do in life just try your hardest to be the best you can be” Such a positive force not only in my life but so many others. He truly was sent from heaven to work blessings on every person that he came in contact with. He will be missed. Happy hunting in the next life uncle.

I owe my life to Marlene and Dr. Schaede. Went to visit their office one day and Marlene said you don’t look good. Set down, Dr. Schaede is on the farm and I’m calling him in. She called and he quickly responded. His diagnosis led to two open heart surgeries and near death. Still living today thanks to this dear pair of giants.

    Love,

As a physician working in the ER, I would call Dr. Schaede about one of his patients. Not only would he know who I was calling him about, he would know what medications this person was taking and allergies they may have. His patients were lucky to have such a wonderful physician taking care of them.

Prayers and comfort to Mrs. Schaede at this time. So awesome that Marlene and Dr. Schaede were able to spend so many years together. They were a beautiful couple. They both had infectious cheery dispositions. I missed them when they retired from their practice in Marion. His prognoses were always spot on. Just the other day I was remembering his advice once again on how to take care of myself. Fondly remembered.

He will be missed. Dr Schaede was my doctor when I was growing up and when I was in college I got to spend a little time shadowing him in the office. It wasn’t anything formal but it made quite an impression. He and Dr Coy Fitch (from my residency) are the two doctors I have used as models for the way I approach medicine and patients.
After I returned to the area and began practicing Dr Schaede told me that he was proud of me for making it through and then coming back home.
The one piece of advice he gave me was to never become complacent in practice. He told me that the patients deserved better than that. He was a true gentleman and one of the last of a very noble kind.

I began practicing otolaryngology (ENT) in Champaign in 1973 and saw patients referred by Dr. Schaede until he moved to Marion. When he was referring a patient he would take the time to call me and we would discuss the patient’s problem. As a specialist, a call from Dr.Schaede, the patient’s family physician, was frequently very helpful. He was always concerned and acted in the best interest of his patients. It was a pleasure and an honor to have worked with him.
