Shirley Fay Matules

Shirley Fay Matules, age 85, of Herrin, passed away peacefully at 8:27pm on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at Herrin Hospital.

Shirley was born in Christopher, Illinois on July 9, 1934, the daughter of Desmond Lee and Blanch Marie (McGhee) Rogers. She married Jack Ray Matules in Peoria, Illinois on December 15, 1961. He preceded her in death on April 16, 1996.

In Shirley’s younger years, she enjoyed bowling and working with ceramics.  Later in life, she enjoyed BINGO, in which she was very lucky most of the time.  That luck carried over in her interest for the Casino. More than anything, Shirley loved the time spent with her family and the simple comfort of her own home.

Survivors include-

Daughter- Barbara Kay Whiteside of Herrin

Son- James Lloyd Johnson of Dallas, Texas

Son- Randall Desmond Johnson of Meridian, Idaho

Daughter- Rebecca Lynn and Andy Cook of Boise, Idaho

Son-in-law- Leo Waldron of Springhill, Florida

Six Grandchildren

Ten Great Grandchildren

Two Brothers- Joseph Lee Rogers of Peoria

     Desmond Lee Rogers, Jr. of Pinckneyville

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son- Roger Eugene Johnson, Daughter- Lisa Gayle Waldron, three brothers- James Floyd Rogers, Howard Wayne Rogers, and Kenneth Eugene Rogers, two sisters- Joyce Ann Curtis and Virginia Louis Smith.

The family will hold private memorial services at a later date to celebrate Shirley’s life. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is assisting the family with final arrangements.

    I am so so sorry for your loss. I will miss you Shirley. Used to have so much fun with you and your wonderful daughter Barb you raised at Bingo and the one time I went with ,you, Barb, and Lloyd to the boat. You were always very kind to me. You are truly missed.

    Shirley will be dearly missed. Jack & Shirley where like family to me. I played bingo often with them during the 80’s & 90’s. Shirley was beautiful person (Heart & Soul) that I admired greatly….. I give you my sincere condolence in this time of your loss. I will miss her dearly.
