Harvey “Sarge” Helms, age 84, of Herrin, Illinois, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 5:47 a.m. at his home.

Sarge was born on April 29, 1935 in Herrin, Illinois.

He proudly served his country and spent his entire working career in the United States Air Force.  Sarge was a lifetime member of the Herrin V.F.W. Post #1567 and American Legion Post #645, and was particularly active in the events at the V.F.W.  He was an active part of the Herrin Military Ceremonial Team providing military funeral honors for countless veterans.

Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jackie Ray Helms and Harley A. Helms; and a sister-in-law, Drucilla Helms.

Funeral services will be held at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, Herrin on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery with military honors provided by Herrin Military Ceremonial Team comprised of Freeman Spur American Legion, Herrin American Legion, and Herrin VFW Post. Assistance will be provided by the Air Force Flag Honor Detail.

Visitation will be held at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, Herrin on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
