Fred William Stotlar passed away at 3:00 pm Saturday, October 4, 2014 in Evanston, Illinois, where he was attending a Northwestern football game.

Fred was born in New London, Connecticut, on July 16, 1943, the son of Warder and Helen B. Stotlar. Fred was a lifelong resident of Marion, Illinois and attended Marion Schools. Upon graduating from Marion High School in 1961, Fred attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He graduated and received a Bachelor’s Degree in both Finance and Marketing in 1965. Fred married Mary Ann Deason on November 9, 1968, at the First Christian Church in Marion, Illinois, and together, have shared nearly 46 years of marriage.

After graduating from Northwestern University, Fred returned home to work at Stotlar Herrin Lumber Company, Inc. He was joined in 1968 by his brother Dick Stotlar and together they began the leadership of the fourth generation of the company. Together with their sons, David and Brian, and loyal employees they have continued to serve Southern Illinois since the incorporation of Stotlar Lumber in 1901.

Fred has always been an avid sports fan and participant—the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and the Northwestern Wildcats being his favorite teams. He enjoyed being involved in the Marion Youth Baseball league, coaching in the Bronco League for several years and later being an umpire. He has enjoyed playing golf, is a Corvette collector, and always enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends. Fred has held an interest in several Marion organizations with quiet support. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion and has been an active supporter of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ for 46 years. He is a member of the Church Board, serving as the Church Property Chairman, and is an active participant in all aspects of the church including Men’s Fellowship and the church choir.

Fred will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His survivors include his beloved wife Mary Ann, his daughters Sally Stotlar of Walnut Creek, California, Jane Woytek and husband Patrick of Lemont, Illinois, son David Stotlar and wife Jenna of Marion, Illinois. His three precious granddaughters Ellie Ann Woytek, Madeline Ann Woytek, and Ann Elizabeth “Annie” Woytek of Lemont, Illinois, and a fourth blessing to come in March. Brother and Sister in law Dick and Anita Stotlar, Niece Lynn Stotlar and Nephew Brian (Skyla) Stotlar with their children Ashton, Amelia, and Karston. Cousins Dana (Terry) Hoffman, Paula (Tom) Risner, Bill (Judy) Hopkins, Bob (Linda) Borum, Ron Borum, Pat Smothers and Jerry Houghton as well as many special longtime friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Warder and Helen Stotlar, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jack and Emily Deason, grandparents Elmer and Nettie Borum and Fred and Harriet Stotlar, and many special aunts and uncles.

Fred and Mary Ann enjoyed and appreciated the blessings in their lives together—family, friends, and church. Fred appreciated the joys of home, value of work, and the excitement of cheering for sports teams. His quiet, but strong presence will be missed by all.

I am so sorry for your loss. This is such a difficult time and if friends and family could take all the sadness and pain away, we would. As a friend and coworker of Sally’s, I knew her Dad through her…never having the privledge of meeting him in person. I believe that our parents are reflected in their children. Knowing Sally as I do, Fred most surely was a wonderful man. Please know that I am keeping the entire Stotlar family in my thoughts and prayers…and to you Sally most especially! With deepest sympathy - Holly and Garry Waldie

Words cannot express the depth of my feelings of loss and sympathy for the entire family. Fred’s strong, quiet presence is truly what we will all miss. He is one of the finest and most principled people I have ever known. He was also fun and had a great sense of humor.
We were kids together when our family lived on Warder street. I’ll never forget my mother’s relating a band concert at Logan school: “Fred Stotlar was the only student able to play his instrument without shrieks and missed notes that hurt our ears!”
Fred was an upperclassman when I was in both high school and at Northwestern so I didn’t hang out with him much until he began dating and then marrying my very best friend, Mary Ann. I had the great privilege of being in their wedding and of being included in so many family events over the years. Fred and Mary Ann were part of my wedding, too, and they graciously welcomed my husband, George, into their home and circle of friends and family.
Two more examples of Fred’s generosity and friendship: 1)I had made reservations at a motel in Marion when I came for David’s wedding. When Fred saw this place he said “no way!” And brought me right home. Ellie and Maddy still laugh about that place. 2)my husband knew Fred had a nice collection of knives so he sent a few of his to Fred. When I was in Marion for the MHS class of 64′s 50th reunion this past summer, Fred told me he had put George’s knives on display in his store as a memorial to him. That is how thoughtful and kind Fred was.
Fred’s values and legacy will live through Mary Ann and the children and grandchildren.
My heart and prayers are with each and everyone of you.
    Love,
    Linda

Just aren’t words to express my heartbreak for all of you! Fred and my families go back a long way including a dear friendship of our mothers. He comes from great stock and has proved it in his living. The examples both Mary Ann and Fred had in both sets of their parents has sure shown well in them over these years since they married in 1968.
I am just SO SORRY that you are at this point already to all of you! My best to you all with deep empathy!
    Gayle…….(much love, “Stinky”)
