Arthur L. Johns

Arthur L. Johns, 92, of Marion passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Arthur was born January 25, 1922 in Williamson County the son of Harry and Bessie (Pulley) Johns. He married Sarah E. Borum in Jackson, Missouri on November 9, 1940 and together they have been blessed to share the last 74 years of marriage.

He was a retired coal miner, working at the Barbara Kay and Freeman #4 mines. Arthur was a WWII Army veteran and after returning home he served in the Reserves for 22 years. His memberships included the Marion Third Baptist Church, where he had been a Sunday School teacher for many years, UMW of A and for over 50 years the Masonic Lodge.

When he retired he pursued woodworking, gardening and metal work. Arthur was a great storyteller to his grandchildren, sharing stories of his time in the military and his favorite “nail soup” story. He loved studying the Bible, he was a loving Dad, Grandfather and Husband.

Survivors include his;

Pam Evans and husband Pat of Marion

Four grandchildren;

Christie Henson and husband Robert of Marion

Preceded by his Parents, two daughters – Leellyn Johns and Brenda Vandevoort

Funeral services will be Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Kallem officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5 – 8 pm at the funeral home.

The family would to express a special thank you to Dr. Keller and his nursing staff for the excellent care that they have provided.

For those who prefer memorials may be made to the Carmi Baptist Children’s Home. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, Illinois 62959.
