Jean M. Vecellio, 92, of Morris and formerly of Herrin, Illinois, passed peacefully at Senior Star at Weber Place on July 21, 2014.


Jean was born on July 23, 1921 in Herrin to the late Louis and Fannie (Procarione) Rolando. She married John “Penoke” Vecellio on December 29, 1941. He preceded her in death in December of 1976 after nearly 35 years of marriage.


Mrs. Vecellio was a 1939 graduate of Herrin High School. She managed Zwick’s Shoe Store in Herrin for 13 years and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and playing pinochle, and always looked forward to spending time with family and friends.


Survivors include her niece, Toni (Gary) Rockis of Morris; nephews, Ted McCarty and Terry McCarty, both of Lakeside, California; two great nieces, Christine (Ryan) Linder and Laura McCarty, both of St. Louis, Missouri; and one great-great niece, Abigail Linder of St. Louis, Missouri.


Jean was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Johnny and Louis “Short” Rolando, both of Herrin; one sister, Margaret McCarty of Morris; and her dear friend, Robert Calcaterra of Herrin.


Private funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin where her husband is also laid to rest.
