Charles E. Smith
Marion � Charles E. Smith, 81, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at 8:00 P.M. at his home.
Charles was born July 21, 1924 in Marion to Charles O. and Gladys (Brooks) Smith. He married Maxine Gregor on September 23, 1944 in Newton, Illinois and together they shared over 39 years of marriage until her death on February 15, 1984.
Charles retired from Zeigler Coal Company in July, 1986. Following his retirement he leased and operated the Lake of Egypt Country Club for a few years. He was a WWII Army Veteran; serving with the 906th AAA (AW)BN in American Theater. During his service he drove trucks to transport military personnel, ammunition, rations and supplies. While serving in Panama he was the personal chauffeur for General Robert W. Berry. Charles was a member of Marion�s VFW Post #1301 and American Legion Post #147 and Marion Eagles.
Charles is survived by:
Daughter � Kimberly Johns and husband Jesse of Clinton, Illinois and children � Jesse Lee, Kellie and Kristal
Cora�s Daughter-in-law � Linda K. Shaw and children � Cara and James
Preceded by: Parents, Wife, Maxine, companion and very dear friend Cora Shaw and Cora�s son, Gary Shaw.
Funeral services will be Monday, May 22, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion with Chaplin Rob Roloff officiating. Burial will follow Odd Fellows Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by Marion�s VFW Post #1301 and American Legion Post #147. Visitation will be Monday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at the funeral home.
For those who prefer memorial may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at Mitchell-Hughes.
