Colonel Hughes was and is a great inspiration to me. He interviewed me upon my application to the Regular Army at Fort Rucker, Alabama in 1962. Later in Vietnam while Colonel Hughes was 12th Aviation Group Commander he inspected A Troop, 3/17 Air Cav which Served as Commander (Silver Spur 6) I still have my Corn Cob 6 pipe he gave me that day. Bill (deceased) and I had known Ann and J.C. for many years. I remember a wonderful party in our home in J. C. 's honor , when he regaled us with stirring stories and gave all the guys corncob pipes. My children were enthralled, as we all were. He had lived quite a life!!
