Willis Edward "Bill" Harlow

Herrin- Willis Edward Harlow, age 89, of Herrin, passed away early Friday morning, July 18, 2014 at HurricaneCreekAssistedLivingCenter in Herrin.  Willis was born in Monmouth, Illinois on May 31, 1925, the son of Raymond Francis and Maggie Marie (Graves) Harlow. He married Virginia Ann Duncan in Mount Vernon, Illinois on June 24, 1951. They have shared more than sixty-three of marriage.  She survives in Herrin.   Mr. Harlow was a member of the HerrinFirstUnitedMethodistChurch where he enjoyed being active in Sunday School classes and serving on several committees.  After thirty-two years of working for Maytag in Herrin, he retired in 1988 as a project engineer. After retirement, he drove a school bus and spent several years as a courier for Southern Illinois Healthcare. Bill proudly served in the United States Air Force, having served during World War II. During his time in the Air Force, he received the Air Medal Cluster.  He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and skiing and camping at CrabOrchardLake, where he and his wife were also members of the Crab Orchard Boat and Yacht Club.  Survivors include his wife- Virginia Ann (Duncan) Harlow of Herrin Daughter- Leah Marie (William Jewel) Bethel of Raymondville, Texas Son- Bradley Scott (Sherrie) Harlow of Carterville Daughter- Patricia Lynn (James Robert) Groves of Mulkeytown Five grandchildren- Virginia Ellen (Aaron) Carney      Haley Groves      Jewell (Brandon) West      Kyle (Ashley) Harlow      Dustin (Cynthia) Harlow Six Great Grandchildren Sister- Shirley Ann (Richard) Farmer of Cape Girardeau, Missouri Several Nieces and Nephews  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister- Lois Maxine Miller. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Bill Wiggs, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery with military honors provided by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts. Visitation will be held from 12:00pm-2:00pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to the Herrin First United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home; 201 S 13th Street; Herrin, IL 62948.
