Herman Charles Berra Herrin - Herman Charles Berra, 82, died at 10:l5 a. m. on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the Marion VA Nursing Center in Marion, IL. Mr. Berra was born March 28, 1919 in Clifford, Illinois to Mike and Lena (Branca) Berra. During WW II he was a Sergeant in the Tank Division. He served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Herman started his working career at the Ly-Mar Hotel at the age of 16 years. Later he was night manager and bartender at the Illinois Caf for over 30 years. He married Lorraine Young on March 29, 1955 in a civil service in Chicago and they later had a second wedding ceremony in 1956 at their home church Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. He was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin where he was Baptized as young boy. He attended school at St. Mary's Catholic School and he graduated from Herrin High School. He belonged to the Herrin Knights of Columbus since he was 18 years old. He was a member of the Herrin American Legion and VFW Post. He also was a member of the Rome Club and the Lombard Society. Survivors include: Wife: Lorraine Berra of Herrin One Son: Michael Santos & wife Sandra of Manchester, CONN. One Daughter: Janice Short & husband Jack of Herrin Three Grandchildren: David & wife Lisa Short of Herrin Michael Charles Santos of Boston, MASS. Peter John Santos of Manchester, CONN. Two Great Grandsons: Ethan Bentley of Herrin Andrew Short of Herrin He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother John Berra, and one nephew Chris Berra. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at the OLMC Catholic Church. Monsignor Kenneth Schaefer & Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery with military rites conducted be the Herrin American Legion & VFW Post. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home. The prayer service will be held at 6:00 P.M. Page 2 Memorials may be made to the OLMC Cabrini Hall School Building Fund or Herrin Junior Baseball League. Memorial Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home
