Herrin- George Dean Mays, 71, of Herrin, passed away at 7:28 AM, Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Select Hospital in Evansville, IN.

George was born on September 25, 1946 in Herrin to Valley D. and Geneva (Keeler) Mays. He married Tammy Smith in 1992 in Freeman Spur.

George worked many years as a truck driver for Shawnee Express and also drove school buses for Herrin Unit #4 Schools.

He was a Christian man who enjoyed talking about God and his grandchildren. He was always joking and telling stories to those that would listen. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing and camping. He will be missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include-

Son- Allan Mays and wife Shelley of Mulkeytown
Daughter- Mandy Mays- Peyton of Herrin
Daughter- Christina Eisner and husband Paul of Voltaire, ND
Son- Steven Mays and wife Tanya of Johnston City
14 grandchildren
2 great grandchildren plus one on the way
Sister- Charlotte Kerrigan of Freeman Spur
Brother- Harold Mays of Princeton, IN
Brother- Larry Mays of Energy
Sister- Annette Branche of Freeman Spur
Several nieces, nephews and cousins

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter- Karen Mays-Brown, 2 grandchildren- Jacob Steven Colyer and Mark Ashby Mays, and 6 brothers and sisters.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Herrin City Cemetery. Rev. Robert Jilek will officiate. Friends and family are asked to meet directly at the graveside beginning at 12:30 PM, Saturday at Herrin City Cemetery. Memorial arrangements were made at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

    I am so sorry to hear of Georgie’s passing. I went to grade school with him in Freeman. He always had a smile and loved life. He must be checking out heaven about now. I know he will be missed.

    George was and always will be family. His family moved across the street from our home before I was born, and he and my oldest brother Carl we’re best friends from then until his death. I will miss him as will both of my brothers.
