Herrin- Charles R. Giese, 79, of Herrin, formerly of Elgin, died at 3:20 PM, Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Herrin Hospital.
Charles was born on April 1, 1923 in West Chicago, IL to Frederick & Edith (Aye) Giese. He married Gertrude Wright on March 9, 1968 in Geneva, IL.
Mr. Giese was a WWII Army veteran, serving from 1943-1945 in Northern Frances, Ardennes, Rhineland, and central Europe. For his service, he was rewarded the bronze star. He worked as a lineman for the Chicago Northwest Railroad before he retired in 1985 as a maintenance equipment operator for the State of Illinois.
Charles belonged to the Baptist Church in Elgin. He was a member of the Elgin VFW & American Legion Posts, the Fox Valley Region chapter of the Model A Restorers Club. He & his son David, enjoyed restoring a 1930 Model A Ford 2 door sedan. He also enjoyed his grandkids (which he never allowed to be spanked), model trains, and talking on his CB Radio. He was known as “Gear Jammer”.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and beloved miniature poodle; “Buffy”.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 Am, Monday, February 10, 2003 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Ken Tiffin will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. The Herrin VFW & American Legion Posts #1301 will perform military rites at the graveside. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM, Sunday, February 9, 2002 at the funeral home.
