Joyce Hope

Joyce Hope, 62, of Marion, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 3:50 am at her home surrounded by her family.

Joyce was born August 23, 1955 in Marion the daughter of James B. and Ruby (Maynard) Hope.

Starting her career at Zwicks Shoes on the Marion square, Joyce worked her way up to managing the store in Mt. Vernon. Joyce became a model and eventually preferred being behind the camera, owning a photography business for 20 years. She came to sell ads for both Withers and River Radio becoming particularly known for her expertise in event planning for clients all over southern Illinois. Additionally, she was an instrumental member of Paradise Alley Players for over 30 years, acting as actor, stage manager, director, and board president. Joyce and her partner of nearly 20 years, David, ventured through 7 Caribbean islands, eventually finding their true home together. Whatever Joyce put her mind to, she accomplished, and the proof is seen all throughout the region. One might say that Joyce truly is southern Illinois.

Survivors include her: Fiancé’ – David Vaughn of Marion

Son – Josh Vaughn of Kirkland, Washington

Brother – Richard Hope (Debbie) of Marion

Brother – Shawn Hope of Creal Springs

My sincerest sympathy to Joyce’s family and close friends. Joyce was a life-long friend. She was always filled with both joy and strength. Her contributions to our community were many–to include her leadership with Paradise Alley Players.

I knew Joyce from Paradise Alley Players. My daughter, Jenny, was in quite a few plays. Joyce was always encouraging and helped Jenny a lot. I worked backstage, got props, did makeup, and other things. Joyce was very easy to work with. Jenny hasn’t been in too many plays lately so I haven’t seen Joyce for awhile. She was a great person and will be missed.

You pushed me to be better than I ever thought I could be, were with me every step of the way when I finally got healthy after years of being a sick kid, and you gave my father the kind of happiness he’s always deserved.

I hope we returned some of your kindness, companionship, and strength that you so readily shared. Since setting out on my own I’ve always tried to make you proud and you always made sure I knew that you were. I love you. I hope you knew how much you were loved by all of us. You’ll always be my 3rd parent and I’ll carry your drive and passion forward as tribute.

I know I’m a better man for having known you, being raised by you. Thank God we had the privilege of having you in our lives as long as we did. Gone, but never forgotten.

Having known Joyce since junior high school, I can honestly say she was a truly good person with a big heart and kind soul. Her legacy includes being a wonderful daughter, mother, friend and exceptional photographer. My favorite pictures of my son growing up were taken by Joyce and I treasure them now and always. My deepest sympathy goes out to Michael and all of Joyce’s family at this time of deep sorrow and loss. You all are in my prayers.

    Dearest Family,
No heart breaks alone, for God is always near, and when a prayer is whispered, he’s always there to here, when sorrow’s overwhelming, he comforts tenderly, for not a single tear will fall, that the Father does not hear.
    (Psalms 65:2 and 83:18)
